Chulalongkorn University Transportation Institute (CUTI) part of $1.7 million international research consortium on sustainable transportation awarded by Volvo Research and Educational Foundation
October 24, 2023: The Chulalongkorn University Transportation Institute (CUTI) is part of the winning consortium of the Volvo Research and Educational Foundation’s (VREF) International Research Program on Informal and Shared Mobility in Low and Middle-Income Countries. The three-year, $1.7 million (USD) project, “An Equity, Ecosystems and Engaged Approach to Informal Transport and Shared Mobility,” offers a collaborative, grassroots approach to knowledge creation by establishing seven living labs in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Led by Columbia University’s Climate School’s Center for Sustainable Urban Development, these labs seek insights into how operational, financial, regulatory, and governance changes enhance shared mobility services. The consortium aims to improve access, services, working conditions, emissions reductions, and public health.
CUTI will host the Bangkok living lab, which will focus on the electrification of informal transport modes like motorcycle taxis, three-wheel tuk tuks, and others. Research will explore not only electric motorcycle and battery technology, but will also look at affordability, business models, and regulations and policies. The project will be led by Dr. Saksith Chalermpong, Dr. Lisa Kenney, Dr. Apiwat Ratanawaraha, and Dr. Ornicha Anuchitchanchai.
“Bangkok residents rely on informal transport modes everyday—to get to work and
school, to connect to mass transit, and to deliver goods. And although electric cars are
receiving increasing attention as part of efforts to reduce emissions from transportation, these informal types of transport have not been included. This global research project
will allow us to strengthen our global network, learn from other similar countries, and
bring attention to Bangkok and Chulalongkorn University in order to make our transportation system more sustainable.” said Dr. Saksith Chalermpong, Assistant Director, CUTI
