– Title: Understanding long-term trends of mode shift in England.
– Abstract: This paper examines the long-term trends in travel mode shift in England using the National Travel Survey (2002–2023) data and a land-use and transport interaction (LUTI) model. The analysis provides empirical evidence on the magnitude and spatial distribution of changes in mode share across English regions over the past two decades, which informs realistic goal setting. Furthermore, a counterfactual analysis based on the LUTI model is employed to explore the potential influence of land-use changes on travel mode choices. The findings aim to enhance understanding of the complex interplay between land use, transport behaviour, and regional context, thereby contributing to an intersectoral approach for promoting sustainable transport policies.
4) Short bio of presenter
Prof Li Wan is interested in spatial economic modelling of urban land use and transport systems. His current research projects include strategic planning at the city/regional level, evaluating the spatial economic impacts of transport decarbonisation and adaptation, and land value capture through development taxes and planning obligations.
