– Title: An envelope concept for the mixed traffic of pedestrians and various mobilities
– Abstract: In recent years, robots and new mobilities have gradually been introduced into public spaces to satisfy people’s traveling and service needs. However, the lack of regulations for machines has resulted in a proliferation of new traffic accidents, and new rules for human-machine mixed traffic are urgently needed. It still lacks a theoretical foundation and discussion materials for making these new traffic rules in different situations. To provide a safe and comfortable walking environment for pedestrians in mixed streets with various mobilities, this research has made efforts to provide a theoretical basis and discussion materials for rule-making of future human-machine mixed traffic. It is defined as an envelope that consists of the physical envelope (PE) and mental envelope (ME). The main focus of this research is the ME. We discuss the definition, expressions, and applications of ME, and then explore its existence and related determinants by conducting a questionnaire survey. The findings would contribute to the development of spatial rules and utilizations of public spaces in the future.
