กว่าสามทศวรรษที่ผ่าน ท่าเรือ ได้พัฒนาเพื่อให้สามารถรองรับระบบการขนส่งด้วยตู้สินค้าที่มีบทบาทสำคัญต่อการขนส่งทางทะเล ท่าเรือหลายแห่งได้ลดบทบาทลง ในขณะที่ท่าเรือหลายแห่งทำหน้าที่เป็นศูนย์กลางตู้สินค้าเปลี่ยนถ่ายเรือ การศึกษานี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยที่ทำให้ท่าเรือประสบความสำเร็จในการเป็นศูนย์กลางตู้สินค้าเปลี่ยนถ่ายเรือ ซึ่ง ได้แก่ ท่าเรือสิงคโปร์ ซึ่งเป็นศูนย์กลางตู้สินค้าเปลี่ยนถ่ายเรือที่ใหญ่ที่สุดของเอเชียและของโลก
จากการศึกษาพบว่านอกจากปัจจัยพื้นฐานด้านทำเลที่ตั้งและประสิทธิภาพในการบริหารจัดการท่าเรือแล้ว สิ่งที่ทำให้ท่าเรือสิงคโปร์ประสบความความสำเร็จอย่างยิ่งในฐานะท่าเรืออันดับหนึ่งของโลก ได้แก่ ภูมิหลังทางประวัติศาสตร์ ในการเป็นศูนย์กลางการค้าทางทะเลของโลก ท่าเรือปลอดภาษี ท่าเรือที่รวบรวมและกระจายสินค้าและท่าเรือที่เติมเชื้อเพลิงของภูมิภาค ซึ่งได้รับการวางรากฐานไว้ตั้งแต่สมัยยังเป็นอาณานิคมของอังกฤษ ซึ่งท่าเรือสิงคโปร์ยังคงรักษาสถานภาพนี้ไว้ตราบมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ความสามารถในการใช้ประโยชน์จากทำเลที่ตั้งทางทะเลซึ่งเป็นจุดศูนย์กลางในการเดินเรือของโลก ในการสร้างโครงข่ายเส้นทางเดินเรือที่เชื่อมต่อท่าเรือกับพื้นที่ตอนหน้าซึ่งอยู่โพ้นทะเลทั่วโลก และความสามารถในการเอาชนะปัญหาอุปสรรคนานัปการ ได้แก่ การขาดแคลนพื้นที่ ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ และแรงงาน ซึ่งนำไปสู่การขาดแคลนพื้นที่แนวหลังของท่าเรือ

Over three decades ports have been developed to keep pace with the containerisation which plays a crucial role in maritime transport. Some ports have diminished their role in the transport system while some have become a transshipment hub of a region. The objective of this story is to investigate how the Port of Singapore becomes the transshipment hub not only of Asia also of the world.
It is found from the study that apart from the prime maritime location, efficiency in port management and administration which are the general factors in success of all ports, there are three factors that make the success of Singapore Port outstanding. First is the sound historic background as the centre of world seaborne trade; the free port; the entrepot port and bunker port for the region. These have been solidly set up since Singapore was the British Crown Colony and the port has served these roles up to present. Second is the competency in utilisation of the prime location as the international crossroad of maritime transport to create the shipping network with the forelands all over the world. Last but not least is the ability to overcome all kinds of severe obstacles such as lack of land area, natural resources and labour which lead to lack of hinterlands for the port.
